PNGOPRA Entomology Section Provides a Refresher Training to NBPOL Smallholder Affairs (SHA) Sexavae Treatment Team – by Thom Thaddy Batari

Upon request from the Head of NBPOL Smallholders Affairs (SHA) Department, PNGOPRA Entomology Section conducted a refresher Targeted Trunk Injection (TTI) Training for the Smallholders Sexavae Treatment Team on the 13th June 2019 at Dami Oil Palm Research Station.

Since all team members had attended previous TTI trainings conducted by the section, this training concentrated on practical demonstrations as a refresher. The main areas covered in the training comprised the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for each team member, pre-treatment preparatory procedures, petrol-oil mixing ratios for drill machines, knapsack refilling procedures, drench gun calibration procedures, steps to correct drilling procedures, the standard team operational procedure, the correct packing and disposal of wastes, steps in freshening up (showers and drinking) after the operations, and steps in reporting accidents and seeking medical attention. In all aspects of the training, the importance of safety when handling the insecticide (Dimehypo) for treatment was emphasized.

The TTI team members were used for the demonstrations and most members were knowledgeable with the treatment procedures due to previous training and experience.

After the training, PNGOPRA Head of Entomology (HoE) commended the team for effectively carrying out the treatments for the blocks recommended for TTI during the year, and encouraged them to continue the good work.

Certificates of participation were organized for all team members that attended the training.
