PNGOPRA Entomology Section Staff Received Chainsaw Operation Training – by Thom Thaddy Batari

The PNGOPRA Entomology Field team received an hour chainsaw training on the 31st May 2019 facilitated by two NBPOL Smallholder Affairs (SHA) Chainsaw operators, after the section bought a new chainsaw. The training on the use of the machine was vital for Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements, as none of the section staff have had prior training and experience.

The areas covered during the training included petrol to oil mixing ratio, pre-checking of machine prior to use, procedures for stripping the machine for service and repair, and general handling of the machine. The training was very informative with new knowledge and skills acquired by the PNGOPRA Entomology field staff.

There was also a practical session where Entomology staff were given turn to operate the chainsaw under closed supervision from the trainers.

After the training, PNGOPRA Entomology Research Associate on behalf of the section thanked the trainers for a well delivered training.

The chainsaw will mainly be used for falling and chopping dead palm trunks for Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) research.

Awesome post. I want to share a few things.

I bought my first saw a few years ago. Have learned a lot but still much to learn. Chainsawing, especially in the woods, is really dangerous! I got reminded yesterday when I was clearing a trail and a simple cut on a small, 4″ tree turned a little scary when part of the tree came crashing down unexpectedly and fast.

Yes, it was small but with the force it hit the ground, I was thinking, “Gee that would have hurt had it hit me!” Caution is in order even with little trees!

There should be a chainsaw/felling/limbing/bucking school! As you say, the basic info is a lot to absorb and understand.

    Chris
